Potential Impact Radius (PIR)

The Potential Impact Radius (PIR) defines the circle around a gas pipeline within which a full-bore rupture and ignition would cause significant thermal impact. It is the basis for identifying High Consequence Areas (HCAs) and scoping an integrity-management program. This calculator returns the PIR from the pipe diameter and maximum operating pressure.

It uses the PIR relationship in ASME B31.8S (the same basis as 49 CFR Part 192 integrity rules).

What it computes

  • Potential Impact Radius from diameter and MAOP
  • Basis for High Consequence Area (HCA) identification
  • Input to integrity-management and class-location review
