Crossings

Uncased Pipeline Crossing Analysis

Uncased crossings — where the carrier pipe is installed directly, without a casing — are now common practice and are analyzed with the uncased procedure of API RP 1102. This analysis checks the barrel, circumferential, and longitudinal stresses in the carrier pipe under highway or rail loading, including the impact factor and depth-of-cover effects.

It is the check that justifies leaving a crossing uncased while still satisfying the loading and stress limits.

What it checks

  • Circumferential (barrel) stress under live and earth load
  • Longitudinal stress from pressure, temperature, and bending
  • Combined effective stress vs. allowable
  • Impact factor and cover-depth sensitivity
