Blowdown Thrust Force Analysis

Venting a pressurized gas line during a blowdown produces a real reaction thrust at the open end — enough to whip an unrestrained stack or endanger crew. This calculator estimates that thrust force from the line pressure, vent geometry, and gas properties.

The result sizes the vent restraint and thrust blocking and helps define the personnel exclusion zone around the blowdown point.

What it computes

  • Reaction thrust force at the vent during blowdown
  • Sensitivity to line pressure and vent-stack diameter
  • Restraint / thrust-block load
  • Basis for exclusion-zone sizing
