Lowering-In Stress Analysis (API RP 1117)

Lowering an existing or newly welded pipeline from the right-of-way into the trench bends the pipe over the sidebooms and hold-down points, and mismanaged spacing can overstress it. This tool models the lowering-in operation to check bending, tensile, and combined stresses against allowable limits.

It follows API RP 1117 (Movement of In-Service Pipelines), the recommended practice for lowering and relocating pipe safely.

What it checks

  • Bending stress over sidebooms and hold-down points
  • Combined stress along the lowered span
  • Required sideboom spacing and lift height
  • Sag and support geometry during the move
